Can Barney Frank Bring “Deliverance” For Online US Casino Players?
As all online US Casino players will be aware, the Bush administration certainly made life difficult when they slipped the UIGEA into the Safe Port Act in 2006. Signed on “Friday the 13th”no less, this act has led to the ultimate “Nightmare on Elm Street”, not only for the online casino and gaming industry but also for those who like to kick back once in a while and play a few hands of online poker (and casino games and slots and craps and.... well you get the picture). Yet help could soon be on its way in the form of the Democratic Representative, and surely the new hero of all the latest online casinos US players, Barney Frank.
The New York Times reported on May 25th 2009, that Mr. Frank has once more brought in new legislation to repeal the Internet gambling laws which have made life difficult for online US casino players. Although players themselves are effectively not breaking any laws (as it would seem), as the law stands it is increasingly difficult for US online casino players to deposit funds owing to the fact that financial institutions are prohibited from processing transactions to and from gaming websites. Mr. Frank has called for the regulation of the online gaming industry and appears to be appealing to those who think the government coffers could do with a boost, by pointing out that the tax revenues from regulated online gaming could be huge. With the current economic climate being what it is, this looks like a clever move.
Mr. Frank also criticized the intrusion on the individual’s liberty and is quoted by the New York Times as announcing “Most actions the government should stay out of”. A sentiment most US online casino players would surely agree with. Mr Frank has approximately 24 co-sponsors and the support of the powerful group “The Poker Players Alliance”, who it is reported have already raised more than $3 million dollars in their quest to overturn this bill.
The legislation will have concessions, for example individual states and Indian Tribal lands will be able to decide whether or not they will allow US online Casino players under their jurisdiction to use the newly licensed web sites, yet this returns the status of online gambling to where it was before the Bush Administration made US online casino players want to “Scream” in frustration.
The legislation is of course not without opposition mostly from the conservative right and sports organizations. However, it looks like Capitol Hill has a fight on its hands; the legislation is impressive and has been revised since the first attempt. Mr. Frank believes the support of all online US casino players is absolutely vital and the key to success. So with that in mind, make your voice heard and let’s bring online gaming back “from beyond”!
