Serious About Poker - The World Poker Tour

Author: Victoria Fell

If you are serious about poker then you will probably have heard of the World Poker Tour (WPT), yet most amateur players aren’t sure what it is all about. The World Poker Tour is a series of Texas Hold ‘Em poker tournaments, which are held all over the world. The World Poker Tour began in 2002, with that season culminating in the World Poker Tour Championship, held at The Bellagio Casino in Las Vegas in April 2003. The winner that year was Alan Goehring who netted a cool $1 million. The highest amount ever won by the WPT Championship winner was in season 5, when Carlos Mortensen won $3,970,415!

The World Poker Tour on TV

The World Poker Tour is one of the highest rated shows on American Cable and continues to entertain audiences and attract interest as it has gone from strength to strength. Most agree that the biggest reason the World Poker Tour remains so popular is due to the fact that as long as you can pay the “buy in”, or win a satellite to the event then anyone can play. This means that the World Poker Tour is a mix of professionals and amateurs that are serious about poker.

In 2009 the World Poker Tour introduced bracelets for the WPT Championship winner. This is in line with what the World Series of Poker (WSOP) award their winners. Previous winners of the WPT Championship have been awarded bracelets retrospectively.

Becoming Player of the Year

The World Poker Tour also awards a ‘Player of the Year’. They do this using a points system. All players who rank from first to seventh in all Open events are given points ranging from 1000 for the winner to 200 for seventh place. The ‘Player of the Year’ is then presented the player who has accumulated the most points over the season. The first ‘Player of the Year’ went to Howard Lederer.

So if you are serious about poker make sure you check out the online poker rooms for WPT satellites and you could find yourself on the tour next season, playing for millions of dollars!
