Sports Betting History

People have been gambling for thousands of years, and can be traced back to religious rituals in prehistoric societies. These rituals purpose where foretelling the future, and consisted of casting small objects like pebbles and sticks to the ground and interpreting their patterns. The next step in evolution saw the participants sacrificing certain commodities to encourage the Fate/ Gods to deliver help with the outcome of these rituals. They gambled their stakes on the outcome that depended on chance, and soon this became an activity linked with everyday life, using these games as a way of decision making. The ultimate step in evolution occurred when people decided to gamble with their stakes for material gain.
Gambling since then has played a part in the history of Nations, in 1000 AD it was said that the King of Norway and the King of Sweden were in dispute over an isolated area of land, and because this could not be resolved they agreed to roll a pair of dice. Norway received the territory by gaining a higher outcome and it is said that the two kings departed on amicable terms.
Since then society have been betting the outcome of horse races, brawls and cockfights in the hope of a profit and as a form of leisure and entertainment. It seems that if there was a sport to be played there was someone somewhere willing to bet on the outcome. In the early 19th Century, Racing was a sport that was enjoyed and wagered on by mostly the upper class, however after the events of the Civil War, Horse Racing tracks began to appear all over and members of all economic sectors flooded the tracks to place their bets.
Today, betting on sports has become more popular than ever with hundreds of billions of dollars being wagered each year. Throughout the world betting occurs in just about everywhere, yet there are some countries that consider gambling as illegal.

Types of Bets

To maximise your betting experience, we recommend familiarizing yourself with the different types of bets available. Below is a rundown of bets you can find on an Online Sportsbook:

Straight Bet
This is the simplest type of bet to understand and is highly recommended to new players. A straight bet is usually offered on a match involving two teams (e.g Soccer, Baseball) where you need to predict which team will win, one team and one result.
Total Bet
Sportsbooks will post the total points that it predicts will be scored in a game. When you bet on a total bet, you predict the total points will be more or less than what has been posted by the sportsbook.
Parlay Bet
A parlay bet is a number of Straight Bets combined into one single bet. This bet can be risky as it doesn’t matter if you get 4 out of 5 bets correct, the conditions of success payout if you get all five bets right, otherwise you lose the bet. This kind of betting is more frequent with European Sportsbooks.
Teaser Bet
This is a modified Parlay bet and offers you the chance to bet on totals as a reduced risk to your bank roll. The Sportsbooks will “tease” the totals to improve your chance of winning however the odds are significantly reduced. Teaser Bets are most commonly offered on football.
Future Wagers
This type of bet can only be used when the result will be determined in the future such as a few weeks or months in advance. For example you can place a future wager the winner of the World Cup, Super Bowl or even the X Factor. These bets are placed at the start of a season and pay exceptional odds.

Understanding Odds

In an online Sportsbook, there are three ways odds can be displayed, decimal, Faction and American. Understanding betting odds is critical when placing bets that you hope to make a profit.
Decimal Odds are the most popular odds in use today, and clearly state how much money can be gained from a bet unit of 1. Check each Sportsbook for their unit of preference as a unit of 1 can mean 1, 10 or even 100.
Fractional Odds are the oldest and most commonly used odds in the United Kingdom. Like the decimal odds they follow the same premise in that they are figured from a 1 unit stake, however they differ in meaning. These odds advise the bettor how much profit will be returned from 1 unit staked as opposed to how much will be returned per 1 unit stake.
American Odds differ completely from the others and are based on a 100 stake and tell either a positive or negative result. For example if it is written with a positive then it will advise how much profit can be made on the 100 stake, whereas if written as a negative then it shows how much of a stake is needed to make 100 on the bet.

How to bet on Sports

The aim of sports betting is to beat the Odds Makers and win money, placing bets on your favourite sports can make the game more exciting if you know you could stand to make money from the result.
To place a bet, register with one of our recommended SportsBooks. Most Sportsbooks use a daily schedule to organise each days games. This relates to any event: Football, Basketball, Hockey, Motor Racing, Horse Racing etc basically any event where there is betting action. If you are betting on Horses for example you will need to decided whether you want to bet to win, or each-way (the horse must finish first to fifth). An each way bet is twice the cost of the bet to win, as your stake goes on the horse to win and to be placed.
Once you have chosen your horse, you will be given the odds that are paid out should that horse win. Therefore if you placed a £10 bet on a horse that has odds of 3-1 and wins your payout will be £30 plus your initial £10 back.
