Responsible Gambling

Author: Sylvia Garcia

Let’s face it…gambling is fun and can even be a lucrative venture but most people lose because they fail to practice responsible money management. In order to win at gambling, you have to view it as a typical business venture. What does this mean? As in any business venture you should opt to maximize reward and minimize risk.

There are basically three types of casino players. There are the ones who only play at brick and mortar casinos, the ones who play at online casinos and finally there are those who play at both.

If you only play at land-based casinos it should be easy for you to be a responsible gambler. It just takes a little discipline and you should follow one simple rule. You should only take a set amount of cash for gambling, and leave your credit and debit cards at home. Once you’ve gone through your bankroll you leave the casino. On the trip home you will be patting yourself on the back for making such a wise decision.

If you play online, beware of games that give the house a huge edge. You are better off sticking with online poker where you can risk a little, play a long time and sometimes win a lot of money. If you play at both land-based casinos and at online casinos, simply incorporate both of the strategies outlined above.

Want to know why most people lose at land-based casinos? The reasons may not be what you think.

They are:

    1. Free alcohol. Ever wonder why casinos are so willing to douse you with free alcohol? Alcohol dulls your reasoning and causes you to make stupid mistakes.

    2. Scantily-clad women. These beautiful, scantily-clad women are put there to distract you.

    3. All of the bells and whistles and cheering crowds. All of these distractions give you a false sense of hope.

    4. The lighting. Casinos deliberately create an atmosphere where time is meaningless. This keeps you playing longer than you would if you could actually see day turn to night.

So what are the advantages of playing at an online casino?

    1. No alcohol... unless you choose to imbibe while you play.

    2. You can shut off the sound on your computer to limit distractions. This will allow you to make clearer decisions.

    3. No scantily-clad women. Again, limited distractions.

    4. You have clocks and windows at your home so you can watch time pass and pre-plan how long you will spend gambling.

    5. You play from the comfort of your own home.

In light of the above, gambling at home seems to make more sense as long as you only wager a pre-set amount of cash and don’t spend more than you can afford to lose. Once you’ve reached your pre-determined limit, shut off your computer and quit playing. And if you happen to win, withdraw your funds and don’t log into the casino again until your winnings have been deposited into your bank account.

Remember, gambling is like anything else. It should be enjoyed in moderation and you should never wager more than you can afford to lose.
