Slot Machine Tricks

Author: Sylvia Garcia

Before you get too excited, let me just say that there really aren’t many trade secrets when it comes to playing slot machines. If there were you can be sure casinos would do their darndest to eliminate them. That being said, there are a few rules that you can apply that will help you to minimize your losses and maximize your gains.

So what are they?

1. Familiarize yourself with the machine. Most online casinos offer a ‘fun’ mode that allows you to familiarize yourself with the game without having to risk any of your hard-earned cash. Take advantage of these practice games to ensure you understand the winning combinations and to estimate your bankroll (this is very important) so that you are able to play for at least an hour.

Why is this important? Because all slot machines function with the same principles and pass through two stages: the phase of building up the cash reserves (this is when slot machines are thought to be ‘cold’), and the phase when the machine pays out (this is when slot machines are considered ‘hot’). This phase lasts way less than the first phase.

During the cold phase there will be some winning moments, but the rhythm is much slower than when the machine is in its hot phase, and you will see your money being depleted. In the hot phase the rhythm of the payout is much quicker and you will see your profits rise; however this phase doesn’t last long.

On average, there are between two or three hot phases during the course of an hour, but this can vary greatly from machine to machine. While playing in the fun mode, check out the best pattern on that site, keeping in mind, of course, that winning phases may be exaggerated in fun mode. In spite of this fact you should still be able to establish which slot games are the more optimal ones to play.

2. Machine choices may seem pretty broad but in actuality the majority of machines are practically identical as they all use similar software and are just outwardly different. Machines can be grouped into the following categories:

a. Slot machines with 3 reels and 1 line (these allow you to play 1 to 3 credits (coins) at a time).

b. Slot machines with 3 reels and 5 lines (which allow you to play 1 to 5 credits).

c. Slot machines with 5 reels and 5, 9, 15, 20 or more lines. All three of these are either set up to be played as standalone machines or are hooked up to a progressive jackpot network.

Slot machines with 3 reels pay out more often, but the amount of the payout is lower, while slot machines with 5 reels, with more lines being played, offer more wins of a higher value.

Machines hooked up to a progressive jackpot network will pay out even less often, but the jackpot is greatly increased, and so are the odds of winning. It is therefore important to understand the amounts that have been previously won via the jackpot, and on which machine they were playing, to find the machine with the best odds of paying out. Plus you should only play these progressive jackpot networks when the amount of the pot is approaching the level of previous payouts.

Keep in mind that wins are more common when you play the maximum bet but the risks are higher, as is the cost. These should only be played by those with a large disposable income.

Finally, always try out new slot machines when they first appear, and play every function the game offers in fun mode. Play 1 coin first then play through each possible amount until you reach the maximum, and then return to playing 1 coin. More often than not, new games are more generous than they are intended to be, with these problems being ironed out over the course of a couple of weeks.

Finally, know when it’s time to stop playing. Set yourself a budget before you begin playing and do not exceed that budget.
