The World’s Top Lotteries to Play

Author: Neha Agrawal

Lotteries have been around for a long time, and continue to be a source of entertainment and in certain cases of luck, vast wealth for certain players. No matter where you live in the world, lotteries seem to be available and open to all. So what are the world’s best lotteries to play?

This year will see lottery tickets for the United States lotteries sold online for the very first time. Although there are many state run lotteries, the biggest lotteries by far are inter-state or national lotteries.

Although California primarily runs the Mega Millions lottery, and Florida the Powerball lottery, almost every other state, bar five, offers both major lotteries. The Powerball jackpot is generally around forty million US Dollars, and rises in five million dollar increments if it is not won, while the minimum jackpot for the Mega Millions is twelve million dollars.

Across the pond in Europe, there are a number of major lotteries. In the United Kingdom, the National Lottery is the favoured national game. Beginning in 1994, it is the longest running lottery in the country, and has created over three thousand millionaires in the country. There are several mini games attached to the National Lottery, making it one of the most diverse lottery games around. Jackpots generally vary from between two to ten million pounds.

The German lottery is also fairly large, where you stand a one in 139,000,000 chance of winning, and like the UK National Lottery, features a lottery mini game called the Glücksspirale.

Australia also has a top lottery to offer its citizens. The Saturday Lotto (also known as Tattslotto, Gold Lotto, and X Lotto – depending on where you reside in the country) is the largest lottery in Australia. Up to four million Australian Dollars are guaranteed each week to the winner.

And, of course, there is the Euro Millions, which is arguably the biggest lottery in the world. Launched in 2004, the Euro Millions is tax-free, and is playable if you live in Andorra, Austria, Belgium, France, Ireland, the Isle of Man, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland or the United Kingdom.

The largest lottery win ever paid out in the Euro Millions was one hundred and ninety million Euros. The lottery has a mini game known as a Joker which can be incorporated into play.

The Euro Millions is often considered a bargain at €2 a line, because of the massive jackpots that can be won. Indeed, many citizens who reside in Euro Millions participating countries often choose to play only this lottery over any national ones, due to the vast total of the lottery jackpots; however, they naturally have less chance of winning due the number of people playing.
