History of Baccarat

With three variations of the game, each with their own unique history, it goes without saying that the origins of Baccarat are complex and difficult to pinpoint. To begin to understand the history of Baccarat as a whole, an ongoing myth must first be debunked.

The Baccarat myth most in need of refuting is that Baccarat began in France. While Baccarat is a French word, it is in fact derived from the Italian word Baccara, which translates to zero; thus the explanation as to why the Baccarat hand is the losing hand in all three Baccarat variations (Chemin de Fer, Punto Banco and Baccarat Banque). The origins of Baccarat are most often traced back to 15th Century Italy and the famed Italian gambler, Felix Falguerein. It is thought that the first Baccarat games were played with tarot cards instead of today's traditional 52-card deck (which itself is derived from the four suits of the tarot).

How to Play Baccarat

The rules of Baccarat dictate that to win you must correctly predict which hand will have the higher value. Wagers can also be placed on the “tie” position in hopes that the “dealer” and “player” hands will end up with the same value.

Baccarat rules are unusual among casino games because the player does not interact in any way with the cards. Unlike other games, like Blackjack, where the player makes decisions in each hand, the rules of Baccarat dictate that the cards are dealt using a specific pre-determined system. Thus learning how to play Baccarat is really about learning each position in the game. While some players prefer the fact that they do not have to make any decisions once they place their bet, some feel distanced from the game because they are not involved and can't understand Baccarat's appeal. Of course after playing they may change their mind.

Types of Baccarat

European Baccarat
This is one of the elite types of Baccarat that is commonly played in most of the casinos in Europe. In this type version, the banker determines the cap in the game and he is the financier of the game.

Chemin de Fer
Chemin de Fer is a French word meaning "railroad" This French type of Baccarat is the national Baccarat treasure of France. This version is being played in casinos all over Europe, but not so much in North America. This type of Baccarat can be played with a minimum of two players. Unique about this kind of baccarat is that the casino does not run the game. One can be a banker, a player, or an spectator wagering at every hand. The banker deals on two hands, and players play against each other. In this type of Baccarat, there is more flexibility with the hit and stand rule, which is different from the American version.

Mini Baccarat
This is the most popular version of the game in the U.S., which is almost similar to American baccarat. This type of Baccarat has a smaller table than the American version. Having a smaller size, it can only be played with a maximum of seven players. A single croupier is in charge of the table managing all the activities that are happening on the table, unlike in any other Baccarat where there are usually three crews. In Mini Baccarat, the croupier is in charge of the shoe most of the time, and also becomes a banker. Mini baccarat however is short of the exclusive features of other types and there is less challenging aspect. This is the one type of Baccarat that is very handy to players as the minimum bet normally starts at $5, and the dress code is casual.

Baccarat Quotes

Baccarat is a game whereby the croupier gathers in money with a flexible sculling oar, then rakes it home.
If I could have borrowed his oar I would have stayed.
Mark Twain, American Author
